THE controversial My School website shows 19 schools in Knox have recorded below average Australian numeracy and literacy standards.
Last Thursday, the Federal Government launched the website, which gives every primary and secondary school in Australia scores based on students’ reading, writing, spelling and grammar/punctuation and numeracy skills.
Based on the ICESA scale, all of Knox’s schools were above the Australian average of 1000.
However, 13 of the municipality’s 36 primary schools, and six out of eight Knox secondary schools listed on the site, were below average in one or more of the report’s categories.
According to the My School’s website, Templeton Primary was among Knox’s top scorers in the reading category and the grammar and punctuation category.
Wantirna (spelling), St John the Baptist (writing), Regency Park and Lysterfield (numeracy) also achieved good scores.
Among secondary schools, The Knox School and Waverley Christian College performed well in all listed categories.
Lysterfield Primary and The Knox School were among the better performers according to the ICESA scale.
The ICSEA value is determined by comparing a school’s performance against 60 statistically similar schools on values such as social and economic background.
Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard said the site showed which schools were performing well and those that needed more support.
But Australian Education Union Victorian branch president Mary Bluett told 3AW that ranking schools on a single figure was "unfair".
Ms Bluett said different states used different ways to measure social advantage, and parents needed to know the context of the figures.
