A ROWVILLE resident is flying high after a medal-winning performance at the World Dwarf Games last month.
Nathan Stewart, 19, has just returned from Belfast where he won medals in athletics, swimming and basketball.
Stewart said it was a great experience to represent his country and to meet people from around the world who had the same condition.
Stewart, who has dwarfism, was part of a 15-strong Australian team that won 25 medals, including 14 gold medals. Stewart won two gold and two silver medals.
He said part of the reason he went to the World Dwarf Games was to show that no matter your condition, you can be competitive in sport.
This year was the first time Australia had competed at the World Dwarf Games. The competition has been going for about 20 years.
The team is mainly made up of members of the Short Statured People of Australia.
The organisation hosts a range of social and sporting events for people of short stature, not only giving them an outlet to meet people with a similar condition, but to also chat about the challenges life may present. Each year, members from Victoria take on their New South Wales counterparts in a basketball competition.
Victorian members also compete in an under-age competition at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
"It's good to talk to people about your condition if you're getting a hard time," Stewart says. Stewart also plays cricket for Mountain Gate Cricket Club.
He said some opponents mistakenly thought he could be easily dismissed, only to find that he was still at the crease some time later.
Stewart is studying television production at Box Hill TAFE. He is also a keen hockey player, cyclist and loves to have a kick of the footy.
