THE only winner on the first afternoon of Chandler Shield's second round of matches was the weather. Persistent rain halted all but two games, delivering a number of one-day fixtures this Saturday.
Across all 16 grades, just a sprinkling of games got under way. For the most part, it was an outing enjoyed by the team with the ball.
In the top flight, Croydon Ranges grabbed the ball after winning the toss against Warranwood and quickly went to work on skittling the Sharks for 147. Scott Wilcox (4-53) and Ben Stallworthy (3-45) did most of the damage.
The final score was helped along by Andrew Spittle's 44 and Luke Scott's 31.
Croydon Ranges reached 0-37 and will expect to win when play resumes this week.
At Wantirna South, Mooroolbark reached 163 in testing conditions with Paul Payne (6-34) leading the way for the Devils.
A fifth-wicket partnership between Danny Walker (41) and Adam Brush (32) rescued the visitors after an early slip-up, forcing an exciting contest when the home team resumes at 0-9 this week.
