Knoxfield looks to boost women's side

03 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
KNOXFIELD Cricket Club women's team is looking to boost its numbers after making the past two grand finals in the Victorian Women's Cricket Association one-day competition.

Despite its recent success, the team has struggled to field a full side this season.

The team's opening batswoman and leading runscorer, Leeane Fredericks, said a combination of injuries and people moving houses had left the player pool a little depleted.

"This year we have had a few injuries and a couple of players have moved away," she said.

Captain Rebecca Flynn said the side had close to 10 regular players but needed more. "With injuries and people working, it can be hard to put together a full team," she said.

Both players described the team as very welcoming and supportive of new players. "We are out there to have a bit of fun, it's all about fun and giving it a go. Our team is great."

The team trains on Thursday nights and plays on Sundays against sides in the south-eastern suburbs.

Fredericks' daughter, Kacy, is the team's wicketkeeper and has gone on to play under-18 representative cricket.

Flynn said mother-daughter combinations were not uncommon in the team, which includes teenagers through to players in their 40s.

She said the social element of the club was also strong.

"We have a cocktail night every year, a trivia night and a Christmas party that everyone goes to.

"We also have a ladies day towards the end of each season where the male players wait on the ladies."

Potential players can contact Rebecca Flynn on 0408564015.
