Silvan beats heat, makes 264

SATURDAY'S sun might have been energy-sapping but it did little to take the zip out of teams contesting the first day of round 10 in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association's DJStrachan Shield and RAFinger trophy competitions.

SILVAN batted first at home to Mt Evelyn and at stumps was 8-264cc led by Clint Sharman with a fine 70. Kane Jones (3-49) was best for Mt Evelyn.

Wandin is 0-22 after dismissing Healesville for 186 (Steve James, 42; Wayne Ross, 4-55), while Seville made the most of winning the toss at home and batted first against Woori Yallock. It made 317 with John Pignataro hitting a fine 125 (Andrew Sharp 3-81). Woori Yallock is not out of this game.

Coldstream batted first at Warburton, but fell foul of excellent spin bowling from Cam Darwall, who took 6-22. Coldstream was dismissed for 162 and Warburton Millgrove is 3-78 in reply.

Gruyere District batted first at home against Yarra Junction and was all out for 254 (G Sweeten, 53; David Lever, 8-111). This game could go either way.

R A Finger Trophy

COMPETITION for finals places is tight with second-placed Healesville making 259 (Richard Maile, 55) against Yarra Glen (John Orren, 3-41).

Yarra Junction at home hosted neighbour Warburton-Millgrove, which could manage only 154 (Steve Darwall, 49; D Robertson, 3-17). Seville has 223 on the board against Woori Yallock (Philip Smith, 45); and Coldstream at home scored 183 in its first innings (Nathan Cuthbertson, 76no) against Wandin for whom Bren Johnson took 6-26.

C grade

THE game of the round is the Bushfire Memorial Match between Marysville and Kinglake at Marysville. The home side batted first and was dismissed for 191 (R Hodgins, 55; John McKenry, 3-16 ). In reply, Kinglake was 2-27 with Matthew Howard 17no and Zac Coleman 7no.
