Vikings' pair to fore in replay

07 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
THE Ringwood District Cricket season started off in the best possible way with a replay in the Chandler Shield of last year's grand final between Norwood and Wantirna South.

Norwood looked in trouble at 7-114 before a rearguard eighth-wicket partnership of 83 between Zak McCubbin (40) and Ben Sansom (42) enabled the Vikings to finish on 210. Brendan O'Riley (42) contributed to the top order and wickets were shared by the Wantirna South bowlers.

A magnificent 270-run, fourth-wicket partnership between Nathan Owen (226) and 300-gamer Jason Disney (91) saw Templeton compile 364 against South Croydon. Travis Degenhardt (5-58) had the Taipans on the ropes early, at 3-2. If not for dropped catches, the Bulldogs' decision to send Templeton in could have paid dividends.

On a lightning fast Guy Turner Reserve, opener Adam Waite (115) and middle order batsman Marcus Adams (46) put Bayswater Park in a strong position at 4-202.

Going for quick runs at the end of the innings, the Sharks lost 6-70 to finish on 276, a commendable score in their first game of Chandler Shield cricket. Croydon Ranges will need to be on song to reel in this target next week.

Mooroolbark won the toss and bowled against South Warrandyte. David Hill (80) saw wickets fall around him. The Hawks were dismissed for 181 after losing their last five wickets for seven runs.

Lincoln Grigg (3-20) was the best of the Barkers' bowlers. Mooroolbark will resume next week on 0-33.

North Ringwood was made to earn every run as it compiled 8-229 against a determined North Croydon side. Stuart Moore (56) and Simon Gray (59) were the main contributors for the Bulls against a very tight Knights line-up.

Wonga Park's new signing, Shannon Small (127), made an auspicious start to the 2009-10 season, setting Warranwood a hard run chase next week.

An opening partnership with Rowan Allport (27) and a second-wicket partnership of 94 with Ryan Coots (36) set up Wonga's final score of 6-278.
